Karen booked us in for the same time the following week, and after we’d said goodbye, Ben, Tammy and I stopped for coffee. I wanted Tammy to complete the Adoption Contact Register form I’d printed off that morning. ‘I’ll do all the leg work, and I’ll pay. I just need you to give me the information.’

‘You’re wasting your time, Eva. I remember my mother telling me that he would’ve been given a new name when he was adopted.’

‘You never know, he may come looking for us. For you, anyway. He wouldn’t know Ben and I existed,’ I said, fumbling around in my bag for a pen. I fished one out and passed it to her, surprised to see my hand shaking as much as hers. My nails tapped the table as I watched her complete the form. There weren’t many questions, but she paused at each one as if she had to consider the answer. Her pinched face looked drained, as if it were a considerable effort for her. Maybe that was because of her dyslexia. Or perhaps her reluctance to complete the task.

When she’d finished, I downed my coffee. ‘I must go.’ There it was again. That irrepressible yearning to be with Joe. The magnetic pull of motherhood forcing me back to my baby. I grabbed a twenty-pound note from my purse and slipped it in the bill holder. ‘See you next week,’ I said, and ran to hail a cab back to my son.
